SACRAMENTO, CA – SEIU California responded to the reported agreement between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to share sensitive information about taxpayers and their families with the Trump deportation machine.

David Huerta, President of SEIU California and SEIU-USWW (United Service Workers West), said:

“Rather than focusing the IRS on its mission to enforce tax law with ‘integrity and fairness to all,’ Trump is exploiting sensitive personal data, information that no one would want shared about their families, to facilitate the mass deportation of law-abiding, tax-paying workers and their loved ones.

“Donald Trump has spent years dividing us as voters based on a lie that families seeking safety in our nation don’t pay their fair share. Now he plans to use workers’ contributions to our economy and our nation to target their families for deportation. This cruel plan exposes the truth that immigrant workers have always paid their fair share, unlike the rich who want to lower their taxes on the backs of working people and families.”

“Families seeking safety in our nation, who work hard and pay taxes, share the same values we all hold dear. Sharing their sensitive data not only exposes them to the indiscriminate removal and cruel detention of the MAGA deportation machine, but exposes the truth of Trump’s immigration policy: targeting criminals was never the point.

“Just yesterday, after a crowd of 1000+ demanded they be allowed to stay in their community, ICE released a mother and three children who had been ripped out of their schools and small town in a bungled deportation enforcement.  Collective action works – and we’ll continue fighting to keep families together and let people seeking justice stay.“
