Just glancing at a few tweets from the official @WhiteHouse Twitter page, you can see that this was no ordinary Labor Day. One tweet said “The most pro-union Administration in history and proud of it.” Another pointed to a web page filled with resources for the 60% of Americans who don’t have a union but want one. And here’s the big, virtual “Happy Labor Day” card on the Department of Labor website.
In a Labor Day blog, U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh wrote, “We’re empowering workers to organize and successfully bargain with their employers.” He noted that the department plays a leading role in protecting and advancing the rights of America’s workers, including developing new tools and resources to protect every worker’s right to organize. Increasing union membership means a stronger economy and better quality of life for workers and their families. And Secretary Walsh should know…he comes from a union family.
