Statement from SEIU 2015 President Arnulfo De La Cruz on Biden endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for President

July 23, 2024

The day after President Biden’s announcement that he’s withdrawn from the race and endorsed Vice President Harris, you could already feel the excitement at our union—a union made up primarily of women of color who are energized by the prospect of electing a woman of color to be President of the United States.

With its roots in slavery and sexism, the long-term care industry’s providers work in the shadows for low pay, no job protections, and lack of respect. The Biden/Harris White House was the first to lift up the importance of long-term care and place it at the very center of its plans to rebuild the U.S. economy after the COVID-19 pandemic. Republicans blocked this plan to invest in care, even though the aging of our planet is a crisis second only to climate change.

Not to be deterred, the Biden/Harris White House brought executive orders to fix our nation’s nursing home industry with new rules establishing safe staffing minimums.

And Vice President Harris has pushed for an orderly and humane system of immigration that keeps families together.

It’s unimaginable what would happen to California’s long-term care system—an industry that relies so heavily on the valuable work of immigrants—if Trump were elected to carry out his plans of mass deportation.

Our members, who reached out to more than 350,000 voters ahead of California’s primary elections earlier this year, are poised to do even more leading up to the November Election.

Caregivers for Kamala!

¡Sí se puede!
