Ruling overturns first-ever national safe staffing requirement, jeopardizing care for older adults, people with disabilities, and the workers who provide essential care.

“Last year, we achieved the first ever national standard on ensuring safe staffing levels in nursing homes, a long needed regulation to ensure the safety of older adults and those with disabilities that would save nearly 13,000 lives a year. 

“The Texas federal judge’s ruling to strike down the Biden Administration’s lifesaving safe staffing requirement is immoral—not just an offense to nursing home residents and their families, but also to the long-term care workers across the country who work with broken hearts because they’re unable to provide the kind of compassionate care they want to extend to all residents.”

SEIU Local 2015 is the largest union in California, representing more than half a million long-term care workers (home care, skilled nursing facility, and assisted living center workers) throughout the state. Its members are as diverse as the state’s population but united in their commitment to caring for California’s older adults and those with disabilities.
