SEIU Local 2015 is the largest union in California, representing more than half a million long-term care workers (home care, skilled nursing facility, and assisted living center workers) throughout the state. We are also the largest long-term care union in the U.S. and the largest local union in SEIU.

Our members are as diverse as the state’s population but united in their commitment to caring for California’s older adults and those with disabilities.

SEIU Local 2015 is California’s Long Term Care workers organization that will unleash the collective power of long term care workers, their families, and their communities, harness the power of technology, and build a broad movement to disrupt the unjust status quo in order to bring lasting transformational change towards a more just society for all.

SEIU Local 2015 is a diverse, ethical, and transparent 21st Century worker organization leading with vision, understanding, clarity, and agility, thereby thriving in an ever-changing world.  Through the work of our members, by building partnerships, and embracing innovation and education, SEIU Local 2015 long term care workers will have achieved quality jobs that deliver livable wages, retirement security, respect, and the right to a union for all.  SEIU Local 2015 will have placed the new American Dream within reach by ensuring the accessibility of quality long term care for seniors and people with disabilities, and securing a quality life for our communities which includes access to affordable quality healthcare and housing, safe neighborhoods, educational opportunities, and racial and environmental justice.

Our Justice Agenda

Local 2015 members have declared the following as being key priorities for our members’ futures and the future of our organization:

Racial & Economic Justice
Persistent and growing income inequality and attacks on workers’ rights that we have experienced for decades require us to take action. We must recognize that these historical inequities are rooted in our country’s legacy of slavery, and can only be uprooted by dismantling the systems and structures of racism plaguing our country’s economy. Members of Local 2015 have stated this as a critical issue and this crisis faced by working Californians crosses geography, class, race and ethnicity. Without the security of having a roof over one’s head there is very little hope of achieving your hopes and dreams. Affordable housing for working people is key to restoring our communities. Immigrant Justice
America’s immigration system is broken. We must protect against leaders who would choose to profit for themselves more than value all lives. We believe in the respect and dignity of immigrants; that a modernized immigration system that includes a path to citizenship for the roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants will strengthen our families, our communities and our country. Restorative Justice
Today our criminal justice system produces very little justice. People of color and those living in poverty fare far worse than most. The entire system – policing, the courts, prisons and recidivism – needs to be transformed into one that is fair and equitable for everyone. Environmental Justice
It is an injustice that in California your zip code, race and income often determine whether you will have access to clean air and water, be able to eat healthy food or live in a clean environment. Far too many of our members talk of their families who live, work and play in communities that are polluted by large corporations who are often held unaccountable. We believe that all Californians – regardless of race, color, national origin or income – deserve the right to clean air and water, healthy food and clean neighborhoods. Read more…

LGBTQIA2S+ Justice
True justice and equity cannot be realized until our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Two-Spirit (LGBTQIA2S+) siblings have the freedom to live safely and fully within our communities. As long-term care workers, we know that “care” must include someone’s whole-being. To fully care for our recipients and community members, we must see and respect them for who they authentically are—including who they are and who they love as expressed through their gender identity, gender expression and sexuality.   • January 2020
    SEIU 2015 pledges to be an anti-racist organization and pursue Justice for All.
    At our convention, members voted to adopt our Justice For All resolutions and to commit to becoming an Anti-Racist Organization. We are fully committed to incorporating this into everything the union does.

  • July 2019
    SEIU Local 2015 completes our second statewide listening tour.
    Similar to the Listening Tour of 2015, Officers once again toured the state to hear from members about how their union was doing on successfully advancing their goals; the challenges caregivers continue to face in their work and their communities; and their ideas on how we can work together as a union family to address those issues.

    Executive Order on Master Plan for Aging is released.
    Focused on creating a long term care delivery system that values care providers and ensures access to care for all who need it, Local 2015 members fought for and won an Executive Order by Governor Newsom to bring stakeholders together to develop and implement a Master Plan on Aging.

    Safer Nursing Home working conditions won!
    California signs SB 97 into law - establishing safe staffing ratios for nursing homes - a clear victory for nursing home workers and their residents.

  • August 2017
    Our first ever executive board is created.
    The union elected its first Officers and Executive Board members representing the counties and industries in which our members work.
  • March 2017
    Our founding documents are ratified.
    Members overwhelmingly voted in support of our founding documents. These documents included our Constitution & Bylaws that defines how we govern and guides how we lead our organization, along with Organizational Priorities that includes our Justice Agenda.
  • October 2016
    Overtime pay victory for IHSS workers.
    Home care providers win rights to paid overtime, wait time and travel time. Members also worked with the Governor to restore the 7% cuts to IHSS hours.
  • June 2016
    Minimum Wage increase victory!
    With the power of 380,000 long term care workers now united as SEIU Local 2015, our members help to make California the first state to pass a statewide minimum wage, placing everyone on the path $15 an hour by 2021.

  • February 2016
    SEIU Local 2015 holds its first Leadership Assembly
    Over 2,000 Member leaders from across the state came together to share their vision for our union and define our organizational priorities.
  • October 2015
    Member Advisory Committee takes action!
    Advisory Committee members, along with the provisional officers engage in an 18 month process to create a mission, vision, values, organizational priorities, Constitution and Bylaws that reflects the voices of our members and would shape the founding documents that spoke to the union’s future.

    Our first Listening Tour of California.
    Provisional officers toured the state meeting with members to understand their hopes and dreams for what their new union would be and to learn about their unique communities.
