Members of SEIU 2015, the nation’s largest long-term care union representing more than 400,000 nursing home and home care workers, to host a “Speak Out” event — union members will share personal stories and experiences as essential workers
WHEN:
Tuesday, March 29th
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM PT
WHERE:
500 W. Temple Street Los Angeles, CA 90012 (on the corner of Temple and Grand)
WHO:
Los Angeles County home care providers—including Tracy, Tanya, Anthony, Kishan, Latriya and more—will be joined by IHSS consumers, disability rights activists and community supporters.
WHAT:
SEIU Local 2015 members will gather to bring attention to the inadequate benefits and working conditions that essential In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) caregivers endure. Members will share their personal narratives of care and hardship as IHSS caregivers in Los Angeles County. The members will be surrounded by posters, infographics, and picket signs with the message “Time For $20.”
This “Speak Out” event comes amid a long-term care industry in crisis. Low wages, poor healthcare coverage, and lack of training have led to skyrocketing turnover rates in the long-term care industry. Recent polling from SEIU Local 2015 shows that one in five IHSS caregivers are likely to leave their current position in the coming year, with respondents citing low wages, lack of retirement benefits, and general financial security concerns as the primary reasons for their potential departure.
Media interview opportunities are available on-site with SEIU Local 2015 members and representatives, including SEIU 2015 Executive Vice President Dereck Smith.
