SEIU 2015 members cite the need for federal care investment and humane immigration reform as key reasons for their endorsement.
Lancaster, CA—On October 24th, members of SEIU Local 2015—the nation’s largest long-term care union representing more than half a million home care and nursing home workers—gathered in Lancaster to phone bank in support of George Whiteside, a candidate for California’s 27th Congressional District. The effort focused on reaching out to voters to ensure strong community turnout for this critical election.
“Our community needs champions like George Whiteside who will stand up for workers, invest in our care infrastructure, and fight for immigration reform,” said Dina Lopez, a Lancaster home care provider. “That’s why we’re urging our neighbors to get out and vote—so we can send someone to Congress who will advocate for our needs.”
This event is part of the broader We Decide 2024 initiative, in which SEIU, iAmerica, Mi Familia Vota, Votar Es Poder, SEIU 2015 and SEIU locals across the country are coming together to mobilize voters of color and newly naturalized citizens in key districts. The goal: to make sure every voice is heard in the 2024 election, which will shape the future of our country for years to come.
“SEIU 2015’s members are dedicated caregivers, and they understand that voting for pro-worker candidates like George Whiteside is essential to building a future where care workers and the communities they serve can thrive,” said SEIU 2015 President Arnulfo De La Cruz. “We’re excited to continue organizing and mobilizing in Lancaster to elect leaders who are committed to creating good jobs, advancing immigration justice, and standing up for workers.”
Whiteside has a long history of public service, including his tenure as Chief of Staff at NASA under President Obama and his leadership in creating jobs in the Antelope Valley as CEO of Virgin Galactic. His campaign focuses on improving the local economy, creating sustainable jobs, and increasing access to quality education.
In addition to the endorsement from SEIU Local 2015, Whiteside has garnered support from key organizations including SEIU California, the California Teachers Association, and the League of Conservation Voters. With strong care champions like Whiteside in Congress, SEIU 2015 members are hopeful for legislation that prioritizes the care workforce and working families across the nation.
